Concentrate! Cooper Crab

Meet Cooper Crab and teach your child the skill of concentration.

Welcome to Concentration

We warmly welcome you to the team here at Cape Ability. You have taken the first step in transforming your child’s approach to learning and in fact to any difficulties they encounter in life. We truly believe that our approach can be life-changing.

Why? Because it aims to develop a GROWTH MINDSET in your child. This is a belief that, with the right attitudes, you can achieve anything. By helping your child develop this mindset, you are bestowing on them a lifelong gift! You are developing their capability to tackle obstacles which get in their way. You are helping them to believe in themselves and get along with others. Using our monthly stories and resources to guide you, you can play a crucial part in the learning journey of your child.

How Does it Work?

Tommy Turtle

There are eight stories in the Cape Ability approach, each focusing on a different learning skill. The online stories will be released during the course of the 12 month subscription.  This gives your child time to focus on one learning skill at a time, throughout that month.

These stories teach your child how to become a more capable learner. Children identify with the characters and want to be like them! You can then encourage this skill each month, through our Resource pack – you will have access to resources to help you use the Cape Ability approach with your child on a daily basis.

How to Use the Resources

The idea behind the resources is to enable your child to learn and practice the eight key learning skills.

Each character’s story will help your child understand complex concepts such as how to concentrate, how to be resilient, and how to cooperate.

Each month they will receive a learning journal to print each week that focuses on the learning skill for that month.

With your support, these activities will help them put these skills into action in their lives.

Resources - Month 1

‘Meet our learning friends’ Poster

Introduce your child to our 8 learning friends and read the sneak preview of what each story is about! Why not print this and stick it on the wall so your child can refer to it and remember each friend’s name?

It is useful to get to know the characters so you can ask them to “be like Cooper Crab and concentrate” or remind them to “be a Sadie Spider and try, try, try”.

Character Wordsearch

Have fun together and familiarise yourselves with the characters as you complete this word search. You could even do a bit of research to find out more about each type of animal!

Character Quiz

Character Colouring and Quiz

Here is a little quiz! Can your child remember which learning skill belongs with which character? If they are a bit stuck, they could always refer to their ‘Meet our Learning Friends’ poster.

Don’t worry if they are still a little unsure of each skill. The Cape Ability approach is a gradual one and each story will ensure they fully understand the concepts.

Learning Journal

Instructions – print the journal, cut the sheets in half on the dotted line and staple together to make a booklet for your child.

This introductory journal is designed to help your child get to know themselves better, as a learner. Complete this journal together as a starting point on their learning journey.   At the end of the 12 months, it will be useful to reflect back on this initial journal and see how far they have come – celebrate their learning success!

The 4th page is particularly useful to introduce each learning skill to your child and help them think about themselves in terms of each skill. They may not be able to complete this in one go! But it will be beneficial to look out for times when they do these skills throughout the month – and recognise them. Which leads us to the next resource…

Recognition Chart

Recognition Chart

Give your child learning points if you recognise one of the skills they are demonstrating! If you notice your child being creative and original, for example – let them mark a Kiki Chameleon point on their chart. If they are not giving up on a task, give them a Sadie Spider point.

These skills will be a lot more apparent for your child to recognise after they have read each story, but there’s no harm in having a little try now!
